Schools' Agriculture & Nutrition Fair Highlights

Who, What and Why

Vision

To be the premiere institution supporting agricultural literacy in the Los Angeles Basin.

Mission

To increase the understanding, appreciation and participation of urban teachers and students in agriculture and nutrition through cooperative involvements of the California agricultural industry, educational institutions and community partners.

The 48th DAA is one of 54 District Agricultural Associations, part of the CA Network of Fairs, under the Division of Fairs and Expositions. Our mandate is to put on a fair, which became increasingly difficult as we lost our fairgrounds and the area became more urbanized.

The Program www.agfair.org serves as a year-round resource center for teachers from the greater Los Angeles and surrounding school districts. Free materials are provided to assist teachers in instructing students about where their food and fiber comes from as well as the benefits of healthy eating and how important agriculture is to the economy of California.

The 48th DAA has assembled Resource Materials for teachers including Common Core lessons, from diverse sources, and purchase or receive donations of books, hydroponics materials, bread kits, incubators and aquariums and chillers. Our resource center includes materials for projects in one place- so they can select a subject that coordinates with what they are required to teach in their grades.

The 48th DAA provides workshops on nutrition, hatching chicks, composting or planning and planting a Square Foot garden. Most projects are adaptable to a variety of grade levels.

Programs and materials are free of charge to teachers, in exchange for an exhibit to be displayed at our annual fair.

The Ag Fair is held at Fairplex. The Fair is attended through school field trips. The boundaries of the 48th DAA are the greater Los Angeles basin and surrounding school districts.

The Fair offers the opportunity for students and teachers to exhibit their agricultural projects and to be recognized by receiving ribbons and premium awards.

Our vision is to give every student in our district, through their teachers, the knowledge of the importance of agriculture and nutrition in all of our lives.
